Visit Trasimeno Lake
Lake Trasimeno is the 4th largest Lake of Italy and is surrounded by unspoilt nature, typical Umbrian hills covered in olive and cypress trees, broom and vines.
Extended fields of reeds cover the south part of the Lake.
Tourism and fishing are the two main activities in the villages.
This is where Hannibal defeated the Romans in the famous Trasimeno-battle in 217 B.C.
One of the villages is Passignano sul Trasimeno , the “Pearl of the Trasimeno”. It developed on an important ancient road between Umbria and Tuscany. It is an ideal spot for a relaxing stroll along the lakeside promenade and offers beautiful views from the terraces in the medieval district.
Visit Castiglione del lago
Castiglione del Lago is located on a promontory on the other side of the lake. It is a charming little town, still completely surrounded by it’s medieval townwalls and dominated by the massive triangular tower of the medieval fortress. The Palazzo Ducale is the cultural highlight of Castiglione. In origin it was a medieval building but transformed into a palace in the late 16th century by Ascanio della Corgna, nephiew of Pope Julius III and the first Duke of Castiglione del Lago. The various rooms where covered with frescoes telling the stories of Ascanio della Corgna and his heirs. The Palace is connected with the Fortress through a long and narrow passage, which could be used as an escape route.
