Visit Orvieto

The impressive position of Orvieto, high up a vulcanic rock, is immediately clear while approaching the town from below.
It was founded by the Etruscans more than 2700 years ago but the most impressive monument is the Cathedral, one of Italy’s most beautiful gothic churches. The majestic facade is covered by mosaics and sculptures illustrating the basics of Christian faith. Inside, we can admire the San Brizio chapel with it’s Renaissance frescoes by the masters Beato Angelico and Luca Signorelli.
Another unique site is Orvieto Underground with it’s maze of underground spaces, dug out in the vulcanic rock. Cellars, an olive oil mill and pigeon houses are still visible during the tour.
The unique and original atmosphere of Orvieto is created by the vulcanic tufa stone used as building material of the palaces, the ancient houses, the medieval streets.

Visit Todi

Situated on top of a hill, Todi strategically dominates the central Tiber-valley. In ancient times, Todi was an important centre on the border between the Etruscan and the Umbrian civilizations and later taken over by the Romans.
Before entering the medieval townwalls, the church of the Consolazione catches the eye. Masterpiece of renaissance architecture, it was built on the site of a miracle.
The medieval government palaces and the romanesque cathedral are concentrated on the fabulous main square or Piazza del Popolo.
Todi was the birthplace of Jacopone, a franciscan poet considered one of the fathers of the Italian language. His remains are buried in the majestic San Fortunatochurch.
