Medieval crafts tours in Umbria
Visit Bevagna
Bevagna is a charming little town still completely surrounded by it’s ancient townwalls. A walk in town will tell you about it’s Roman past, still visible in walls, the roman theatre and other remains.
The picturesque main square is one of the finest medieval squares in the Region with a central fountain, public buildings and two churches. One of these, the romanesque San Silvestrochurch is worth a visit thanks to it’s peculiar vaulted ceiling.
Once a year, during the month of June, Bevagna relives it’s medieval past during the famous Festival “Il Mercato delle Gaite”. The Gaite are the four districts competing in the reenactment of the Middle Ages during 10 days. Medieval scenes, taverns and crafts will be presented throughout town.
Several of medieval craft
Several of these medieval crafts can be visited all year round. The Paper Mill, the Silk Spinning workshop, the Chandler and the Painter will demonstrate their work using ancient techniques and original materials.
The visit of an olive oil mill amidst the olive groves will teach you the procedure of oil extraction. Ancient machines and modern technology give you an insight how olives are weighed, washed, crushed, and centrifuged to obtain the so called “green gold”.
