Visit Bevagna and Montefalco
Bevagna and Montefalco are only a few kilometers apart but offer different atmospheres. While Bevagna is located at the edge of the Umbrian Valley, Montefalco is perched high up on a hill overlooking the Valley.
The hills between these two towns are literally covered in vines and olive trees a far as the eye can see.
Excellent Wineries producing the famous local Sagrantino wine and Olive oil mills are to be found in this area.
Bevagna is a charming little town still completely surrounded by it’s ancient townwalls. A walk in town will tell you about it’s Roman past, still visible in walls, the roman theatre and other remains. The picturesque main square is one of the finest medieval squares in the Region with a central fountain, public buildings and two churches. One of these, the romanesque San Silvestrochurch is worth a visit thanks to it’s peculiar vaulted ceiling.
Le Gaite
Once a year, during the month of June, Bevagna relives it’s medieval past during the famous Festival “Il Mercato delle Gaite”. The Gaite are the four districts competing in the reenactment of the Middle Ages during 10 days. Medieval scenes, taverns and crafts will be presented throughout town.
Montefalco, the “balcony of Umbria”, offers breathtaking views on the surrounding hills. The medieval town has intact townwalls with 5 entrance gates. Montefalco is best known as the city of the Sagrantino wine, a strong red wine appreciated around the world. Several winefestivals are held troughout the year. Many eno-gastronomic shops are located on he main street of the historical centre.
