Ceramics tour in Umbria
Visit Deruta
Deruta is known as a beautiful little Italian town but the main characteristic is ceramics and more precisely MAIOLICA ceramics.
During a walk through the charming medieval streets, you will notice the numerous shops of pottery artists!
The town boasts an uninterrupted history of the local production since the Middle Ages. But especially during the Renaissance, Derutaware was widely appreciated and exported throughout Europe. The famous Renaissance design of the Deruta “Raphaelesque” dragon is still produced and available everywhere.
An interesting visit in a workshop-factory illustrates the various steps of the production from clay to the finished Maiolica object.
Visit Torgiano
Just a short drive away, the little church dedicated to the “Madonna dei Bagni” is a surprising testimony of the local religious devotion since the 17th century. After the miraculous healing of a local lady, her husband offered a painted Maiolica tile to thank the Holy Virgin. The story of the healing was hand painted on this ex-voto tile and this set off a tradition that lasts until the present day. Everyone who wants to express his gratitude offers a handpainted tile with the personal story. Today the church walls are completely covered by these tiles which make it an interesting illustration of the daily life over the past centuries.
Of great interest for all winelovers is the Wine Museum in Torgiano, opened in 1974 by the Lungarotti Foundation. This family of local wine producers wanted to share it’s passion for Culture and Wine. The Museum offers an extraordinary display of objects, documents and presentations regarding the History and Techniques of winemaking .
