Visit Norcia
Norcia is a rather remote town located on a wide plain in the heart of the Central Appenines.
The town has the shape of a heart and is still completely surrounded by it’s medieval walls.
Norcia is known as the birth place of St. Benedict, Patron of Europe and founder of the Benedictine order.
Today Norcia is known especially for it’s “Norcineria”. These are the locally produced hams, sausages and salami. But in the numerous gastronomic shops you will also find many other local delicacies such as truffles, cheese and the typical lentils of the Castelluccio plain.
You will find that the gastronomic products are linked to the surrounding nature.
Visit Castelluccio
A drive in the Appenines, always higher up, will lead you to the edge of the Piano Grande, the Great Plain at 1270 m height and part of the Mount Sibillini National Park. The sight is truly breathtaking. The plain is dominated by Umbrian’s highest peak, the Monte Vettore (2478m). After crossing the Plain, you will arrive in Castelluccio, Umbrian’s highest village at 1452m. It is known for the excellent sheep cheese and the typical tiny lentils, grown on the slopes of the hill.
At the end of Spring-beginning of Summer, part of the plain is covered in flowers of the most different colors creating the famous “Fiorita” or spectacular blooming fields.
