Perugia and Gubbio
Visit Perugia
Perugia, capital of Umbria, was founded by the Etruscans more than 2500 years ago. Part of the massive Etruscan townwalls and gates can still be seen today.
The beautiful main square is proof of it’s powerful medieval past with the majestic Palazzo dei Priori and the monumental sculpted fountain celebrating Water, Perugia and the Achievements of mankind.
The Nobile Collegio del Cambio (Hall of the powerful Guild of Moneychangers) was decorated by Perugino, one of the most famous and successful Renaissance painters.
The surprising underground town is a result of the “Salt war” between Perugia and Pope Paul III in the 16th century. After a rebellion organized by some important local families, the Pope decided to build a fortress literally on top of the Noble district of Perugia.
Breathtaking panoramic views complete the visit of this surprising town.
Visit Gubbio
Gubbio was originally founded by the Umbrian people on the slope of a mountain. The Romans took over, extended the town towards the valley where they built a Roman theatre. Today however, Gubbio is known as one of Italy’s best preserved medieval towns. A walk through its maze of medieval streets is really like going back in time.Absolute masterpiece of daring architecture is the main square and Palazzo dei Consoli, built on 4 enormous arches. An elevator leads to the cathedral and the Palazzo Ducale at the very top of the town. During the visit you will also learn everything about the local Patron Saint Sant’Ubaldo and the famous festival of the Corsa dei Ceri (Candle Race) held every year on the 15th of May.
